3D Systems Corp. has released Cubify Rings, the third of its apps designed for printing on the Cube 3D printer. Cubify Rings allows users to create their own rings by choosing a shape and dragging and dropping characters, symbols, and letters onto it and then create them with the Cube 3D printer at home. more

Markzware PDF2DTP Automates Converting PDFs

Markzware has released PDF2DTP, a data conversion plug-in for Adobe InDesign CS6, that allows users to convert content from PDFs into an editable format within Adobe InDesign. The plug-in will recover embedded images and save them in a job folder as well as place the text, frames, images, and colors into the InDesign document. more

Comprehensive Examination of U.S. Book Publishing Industry Undertaken

The Book Industry Study Group and Association of American Publishers have announced a Webinar covering the major points of BookStats 2012, the second annual edition of their joint data project tracking the transformational shifts in the book publishing industry. The project tracks data such as the overall size of the United States publishing industry and how digital publishing is impacting traditional paper publishing. The Webinar is free to BookStats 2012 purchasers and $95 for all others and is scheduled for 1-2 PM ET August 29. more

Kodak Announces Steps toward Chapter 11 Emergence

Eastman Kodak Company has outlined its next steps toward a successful emergence from Chapter 11 reorganization. The company plans to focus on commercial, packaging, and functional printing solutions and enterprise services and has taken steps to sell its personalized imaging and document imaging businesses. The company says it also plans to emerge from Chapter 11 during 2013. more

Moscow Daily Chooses vjoon

Popular Moscow evening newspaper Vechernyaya Moskva has relaunched its paper and online editions in a new news facility using vjoon K4 and Software-as-a-Service. The publisher worked with vjoon’s Russian integration partner Terem-Media  to bring all print and online departments onto a unified publishing system in a new, state-of-the-art newsroom. Together they brought 150 editorial staff members online in the publishing network in just three months. Vechernyaya Moskva is one of the most widely read dailies in the Moscow metropolitan region with a circulation of 300,000 for the daily editions nd 1.15 million for the weekly. more

3D Systems Partners with the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute

3D Systems Corp. has announced a partnership with the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, a U.S. federal initiative. The partnership involves using 3-D printing to empower localized manufacturing and entrepreneurship. The Youngstown Business Incubator, selected as the first site for the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, will receive $69 million in special federal funding. more

Meadows Publishing Solutions has released DesignMerge, a plug-in for Adobe InDesign CS6 supporting creation of variable data output from any Adobe InDesign document. Features include automatic copy-fitting, menu-driven conditional logic programming, multi-up layout support, and PostScript, PPML, Creo VPS, and PDF/VT output. The company says the new version includes direct PDF/VT output and variable 2-D bar code support. more

John Berthelsen Receives 2012 Lewis Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award

Printing Industries of America has awarded the 2012 Lewis Memorial Achievement Award to John Berthelsen, President and CEO of Suttle-Straus Inc. Berthelsen has received a several significant awards during his career including induction into the Printing Industry Hall of Fame, the Englewood College President’s Award for Ethical Leadership, and the Graphic Arts Leaders of America award from the Printing Association of Florida. Suttle-Straus has been included in the Printing Industries of America’s Best Workplace in the Americas list for the past 12 years. more

The Graphics Arts Education and Research Foundation Announces Student Design Winners

The Graphics Arts Education and Research Foundation has announced the six winners of its 2012 Student Design Competition. This year’s competition attracted 176 entries. The first place winners and their instructors will receive a two-day, all-inclusive trip to attend Graph Expo 2012 in Chicago and a $2,000 check. Second place winners will receive $1,500, and third place winners will receive $1,000. more
